On Saturday, May 19th, the Tusket River Environmental Protection Association (TREPA) did a roadside cleanup for Argyle Municipality. Part of the two kilometres was between the 103 Highway and the old #3 Highway along to Quick’s building. The cleanup was done by a dedicated group of mostly older participants who love our roadsides and landscapes.
This morning, the very morning after, on our walk this is what we saw. Someone had dumped garbage right in front of the bags we collected. They couldn’t even be bothered to untie a bag and put it in. I think they probably cleaned out their car because there were items from at least three different fastfood outlets and among the stuff were other papers including a grocery list.
What might contribute to this behaviour?
1. they thought this was a collection point so dropped the garbage thinking someone else did the bagging. Better than just throwing it out along a kilometre of road, or
2. they just don’t get it, or
3. they just don’t get it and want to show their contempt for anyone who wants to respect and appreciate our Nova Scotia landscape.
Unfortunately, such people are always with us. Nothing to contribute and lots to do to pull good works down. A couple of us patrol Chebogue Point Road on almost a daily basis and always find the latest stuff. Thanks to MacDonalds, Tim Hortons, and KFC we always have a source of roadside garbage.
